WILL A DIET HIGH IN PROTEIN KILL YOU?

Will a high protein diet kill you? Well, we’re going to answer that question
today. Hey, everybody. It’s Kristin Shaffer, and you are watching
FAB University, where you get everything you need to live a healthy, fit, and fab life. You may have seen the recent headlines of
a very, very tragic, unfortunate event. A young gal, a body builder, a mom that passed
away after consuming a bunch of protein before a competition. Now, first of all, what I want to say is my
heart bleeds for her family and loved ones. A sudden, unexpected death like this is so
tragic, and my heart goes out to them. And I wanna talk about the sensationalized
journalism around and surrounding this story. There are all sorts of headlines out there
concerning the story and focusing on how “high protein” diets kill. And, unfortunately, this is sensationalized
journalism at its best. For instance, in the New York Post, the headline
reads “Bodybuilder mom dies from too much protein before competition.” And further into that article the journalist
writes, “died after overconsumption of protein shakes, supplements, and protein-rich foods.” Now, it’s often easy to draw a whole bunch
of conclusions from what we just saw, the biggest being, obviously, that high protein
diets must kill people. And it’s not until you get down to the fourth
paragraph in that particular article that the truth comes out, that this unfortunate
gal had a rare disorder which stops the body from being able to break down protein. She had a rare, undiagnosed disorder, and,
to me, to be candid, this is what I call irresponsible journalism. A better, more accurate headline would’ve
been “rare disorder kills.” The truth about diets that are higher in protein
is that it helps you to lose weight and to keep it off for life, and there are lots of
studies to prove that. Now, of course, I wanna hear your comments
