The Journey of Our Bare Root Fruit Trees

The Journey of Our Bare Root Fruit Trees

Hi I’m Tricia an organic gardener. I grow
organically, for healthy and safe food supply, for clean and sustainable
environment, for an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Hi I’m Tricia and I’m here with Phil
Purcell from Dave Wilson nursery and today’s the day we’re getting our giant
shipment of bareroot trees from your company. Yes. so can you just tell us briefly how
long does it take for your staff to get all these trees ready to come over here.
So from the time we start digging the trees, getting them out of the field, into a
grading barn, graded, rebundled and tagged, it takes about two hours and then
from there we go ahead and we put them into our heeling beds. So they stay in the
healing beds until they can get loaded on the truck. Exactly. So these trees right here were actually dug last week. Out of the ground for about two hours, put back in the healing beds, we got them out yesterday, some actually we had to do a
little bit this morning and got them right up to you. So, you know, they never dry out and you guys put them right into the bins so that’s exactly what to happen. Hey everybody I’m Tom Spellman with
Dave Wilson nursery. It’s a mid fall day here at the nursery and I’m here with
some of the representatives from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply today. We’re
touring them through the nursery and showing them the process of growing our trees. So
we’re going to start out here in a brand-new block of Cherry rootstock that
was just planted. This is Mazzard rootstock we use it as standard cherry
rootstock so we’re gonna grow full-size cherry trees on this rootstock. Some of
the things we’re really proud of here at Dave Wilson nursery are our
procedures, our cleanliness, the fact that we’re growing everything non GMO. We use
no genetically modified products at all and all of our nursery stock is cared
for for a year, two years, three years, whatever it takes to grow that finished
product. At Dave Wilson nursery we’ve been
producing quality nursery stock in the California San Joaquin Valley for over
75 years. I can’t see we’re completely organic but we’re conscientious and
eco-friendly. We supply one into your bareroot trees to the nursery industry,
commercial agriculture and good customers like Peaceful Valley. We deal
with many organic growers both certified and backyard style. We grow clean trees
with no bacteria no diseases and no Viroids. To grow organic fruit from our
trees it’s all a matter of how you handle your trees in the future use your
best recommended organic methodology. If you’re a certified grower, check with your local certifying agency for their particular requirements. Future certification of our
trees can be obtained within one to three years of planting. What we’ll do
now is will go over to another block that’s just been budded and show the
next process in propagation. This is our two year cherry block here. These are
Mazzard rootstock that have been in the ground for a full season about 1 month
ago, about mid-October these were budded in the field. And you can see the buding
tape down low on the trunks where the buds been inserted. The buds all face the
northwest direction so that they’ll have full opportunity to grow out and have a
fair amount of sun during the day when they when they start to push in the
spring. Watching the harvest day at Dave Wilson
Nursery is fascinating. It’s done mechanically, but once the trees are dug
out of the ground each trees handled by a human. The trees are harvested and then they’re inspected carefully sorted, bundled, tagged, washed and the roots are kept wet ensure total
viability. Dave Wilson Nursery grows millions of trees each year. The trees are heeled in while they await delivery. Once they arrive here at Peaceful Valley
our whole team works together to receive them and store them in large bins protected
with moist wood shavings, we use pine shavings.Your order will then be pulled, packaged, and shipped to your door. So Phil these trees
are looking really good. What can you tell us about the the harvest this year?
So this year, our trees, because of the extended kinda, mild fall that we have, really sized up. So what your customers going to notice is that these trees they’re getting are going to be extremely robust, well branched. It’s something that we’re happy with, but it’s farming so we can never
control how big or how small these trees get, but these, this year they are a really good caliper size trees. Do you think with the bigger caliper that they’ll fruit
earlier? Well not necessarily but they have a very good branch system to
them, so that gives them a really good start. Super! Yeah. check out the related videos
