How to Read Food Labels for Healthy Eating : Calcium on Food Labels

Hi. I’m Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian
and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment, I’m going to talk about calcium and
how to find it on the food label. Here, the calcium is found with the other nutrients
that we just talked about on the food label. Calcium is a very important nutrient in the
body. It is found in blood clot formation, muscle function including the heart, nerve
impulses and production and activity of various enzymes and hormones. It also regulates the
cell walls and cell wall permeability. Calcium is very important because it averages at about
1.5 percent to two percent of the adult body weight. Calcium can be found in a variety
of foods. It is mostly known in dairy products such as milk and cheese and yogurt. It is
also found in broccoli, cabbage and carrots. So, it is very important that we all consume
calcium because osteoporosis is becoming an epidemic in the American society. It is important
that our children consume enough calcium for the bone growth and development that they
will need later on in life as bones continue to grow until about age twenty.
