Alright, this is John Kohler with GrowingYourGreens.com.
Today we have another exciting episode for ya, and I’m still here on vacation in Maui
having a wonderful time. And the reason I’m here is that I’m visiting a farm for you
guys. It’s Ulu Meli Farms here in beautiful Maui, and it was actually kind of a funny
story. I was at the Upcountry Farmer’s Market near Kula in Maui on Saturday—probably the
best Farmer’s Market on the island that I’ve discovered, and I’d recommend you
guys visit if you haven’t been there already, or when you visit—and I met the farmers,
and they knew who I was because they had watched my videos previously! So that was kind of
funny, and we got to talking and now I’m at their farm checking out their grow of this
unique tropical fruit. While they do have plenty of mango and lychee and avocado trees
growing, this is a relatively new farm and they’re not up to their full production
on those crops yet, although they are producing small amounts. One of the crops they are making
a full production of currently is the lilikoi or passion fruit.
So let’s go ahead and flip the camera around and show you guys how they’re growing the
passion fruit, and what I want to do in this episode if give you guys some tips and tricks
about growing passion fruit if you’ve never done it before from a commercial farmer.
So as you guys can see, what I’m looking at now is basically the passion fruit vines
behind be there. And these are all basically trellised up. That’s tip number one. You
want to trellis up your passion fruit vines because otherwise they will get rambunctious
and go all over and try to find something to climb up on. I grew some passion fruit
at my place and unfortunately it wasn’t a good variety, it was like an ornamental
variety of passion fruit, it didn’t make good fruit. So just recently I cut it out
and that thing was a mess. It vined up on my roof and everywhere! So you could put it
up on a hurricane fence or the outside border of your house like on barbed wire fencing
along the outskirts of the house, which I think is a good to fill up…create some privacy…
Plus create fruit on the outside of the property line which I’ve seen done in many places.
They’re actually growing it on trellises in rows, and what I’m gonna do next is actually
take you guys up there and show you guys some of the specific practices they’re doing
to grow the passion fruit successfully, because it has fruited in nine months and they’re
already up to full production. So whether you want to start a farm or have a little
home garden, grow some passion fruit. They grow and yield very quickly.
So now we’re in the orchard with all the passion fruit vines and a tip is trellis,
trellis, trellis! as I mentioned. And they built custom trellises to house these guys.
Now while they could basically unroll some steel hardware fencing and grow these up that
or grow these up some hog panels, they’ve done it more inexpensive and this is the way
I’m gonna share with you guys. What they did was they took four-by-four posts. They
have them every twenty feet, sunk into the ground. Now I would minimally get twelve foot
posts because the passion fruit will want to grow tall. But you also want to remember
that you don’t want it too tall because you won’t be able to harvest them that easy
if you’re gonna pick them off the vine. That being said, we’ll show you guys how
to easily harvest them. But yeah, they have the four-by-four posts every twenty feet,
then about every, I dunno, six feet or so that have some smaller wooden stakes to provide
some support to the wire as well as give the passion fruits something to grow up on.
So what they have next is actually just bailing wire or wire between the posts pulled tightly
space out about probably every foot to allow the passion fruit vine to climb up it so that
they easily see all the fruits, easily have access to fruits as well as the vines. So
now let’s go ahead and go over and take a look at how some of these vines are growing.
So I’m standing in the middle of the passion fruit orchard and there’s posts basically
every twenty feet all the way down. And each row goes probably about a hundred and sixty
feet. And they got five of these. And that’s literally enough production for them to make
more than enough fruit for them to sell at the Farmer’s Market. One of the sad thing
is about Hawaii is the majority of the tropical fruits grown on the islands is not able to
get shipped to the mainland, so you’ll never get to taste these passion fruits or these
lilikois unless you come to the islands, and specifically come to Maui, to taste these
ones. I think some rules need to change. They have
all these rules where you can’t ship or bring in trees and plants and fruits and stuff,
because they have all these fruit flies and all kinds of bugs which—I guess there is
a reason for that stuff. But there actually are ways to preserve this stuff so it actually
can be shipped off island which I will talk about near the end of this video.
But in any case, they’ve got so much fruit production that they literally have a challenging
time using it all and selling it all just in this small area. So these passion fruits
are quite productive. Basically what they’ve got is every six feet they’ve got a passion
fruit vine growing and I’m wanna go ahead and do a close up of the soil and show you
this passion fruit vine because it looks more like a little tree to me.
Now we’re sitting here at the base of the lilikoi or passion fruit vine and I want to
show you the base down here—I’ll move this guy away—but look at that. Down here
this is like almost like a little tree trunk, although this is a vine and not a tree. And
they’ve got some pretty thick girth on there, it’s like that—hey…pretty envious of
that passion fruit vine. But yeah, it’s growing really well and it just grows up into
this big trellis system. And one of the things you’re gonna want to notice is that behind
that the behind all the living matter, there’s some dried stuff. And that’s just how this
planet operates. It grows, some of the older stuff dries out and the newer stuff is always
on the outside layer. When I pulled down my passion fruit that I thought was a good edible
variety, there was so much excess brown matter behind there. And it was good for me to pull
that down, clean up that area, and grow something new that’s gonna be more productive for
me. Now since they’re doing this commercially,
it’d take a lot of labor to get in there to get all the bad stuff down, so they’re
just letting the new stuff grow in front. And as you guys can see they’ve got lots
and lots of not yet ripe fruits, ready to be harvested after they are fully ripe. One
tip I want to give you guys is make sure you harvest your passion fruits fully ripe for
the best flavor and most nutrition. Another thing I want to mention is how they’re
dealing with the weeds coming up underneath the passion fruit vines, because they wouldn’t
really be able to get in here unless they’re hand weeding. And this is a family owned farm.
Literally a husband and wife do all the work here. This is not a lot of space, and once
it was planted and started up, really the main things you gotta do is come out and harvest.
They’ve got it all set up on an irrigation system and whatnot. And they basically just
have this weed cloth, this heavy duty weed cloth that they put down. They’re holding
it down with some local rock, I like the rock. Don’t import the rock, use the local rocks.
Weeds do not come up under this whole area. Now one of the things that I’ve consulted
with them during my visit here is to start including the trace minerals into the soil
to increase production, increase plant immunity, and also increase the flavor of the fruit.
So I talked to them about the benefits of rock dust, which they were interested in,
aside from the fact it may be expensive to get here in the islands. Be sure to check
my other videos on rock dust if you’re not familiar with what rock dust is. I’ve got
plenty of videos explaining rock dust and why I believe it is so crucial to farming
and growing your own food in this day and age. And then I also talked to them about
adding sea minerals which are another way to get the trace minerals into the plants
and into the soil to improve the production, to improve the taste, and the yield, as well
as the bricks. And they are definitely much more interested in that because it comes in
a much more concentrated form and is much less expensive to apply. In an optimal situation,
I would apply both the sea base minerals—about twenty percent sea minerals, and eighty percent
rock dust personally, but I’m glad if they just do one or the other to get some trace
minerals into these plants to make them more vibrant, more fruitful, and to literally have
the best passion fruits on Maui. So now we’re gonna walk through the lilikoi
orchard and I’ve never got to do this because I never got to visit a lilikoi farm before
today! Super excited. And we’re gonna try to find some ripe fruit and explain when to
pick the lilikoi or passion fruit for you guys. You guys may see, plenty of green lilikoi
hanging on the vine, and, man, these guys can be quite productive here. But you do not
want to pick the green lilikoi, they will not ripen up off the vine. Another thing you
don’t want to do, you don’t want to find a lilikoi fully covered up, such as this guy
right here. This nice purple one. Still a little bit green in the back but that’s
not quite ripe either. I always encourage you guys to harvest your fruits as ripe as
possible. And many fruit trees and vines will simply give it up. They’ll give up their
fruits when they’re fully ripe. So to do this, all you simply need to do is look down!
And there’s a little yellow lilikoi that’s ripe on the ground. And there’s some more,
just hanging out on the ground. So this makes harvesting easy because you don’t have to
hunt and peck in the plants for the ripe fruit. All you simply need to do is walk through
the orchard in the beautiful sun making some Vitamin D, look on the ground and scan for
all the ripe fruit. Alright there’s the one I want. As you guys
can see, it’s not that yellow one, because it’s not fully ripe and a little bit green,
it’s that dark purple one that’s sitting right over here! Yaay, got a ripe one!
So as you guys can see we’ve got some ripe fruit here. Now I want to kind of go over
different varieties of the passion fruits here. They basically planted, they told me,
a red variety, and then they got ones that are kind of yellow and whatnot. And there’s
different varieties of passion fruit much like the different varieties of apples. We
know there’s Fuji apples, Granny Smith apples, and there’s different kinds of the passion
fruit. In general, I recommend you guys always get the more colorful passion fruit. So instead
of getting the standard yellow ones, you know, get the ones that are a little bit red or
purple-ish. They’re general gonna taste better for these standard kind passion fruits.
Now another thing I want to go over is wrinkled verses non-wrinkled. So when that plants drop
the fruit, they’re nice and round, fairly hard and unwrinkled, whatever color they may
be. If they sit on the ground for any significant period of time or they sit in the store for
any period of time, they basically dry up and get wrinkled. So I would like a nice,
colorful fruit, with a little bit of give, not too much give—that can be a sign of
being too old—and really nice color to it without too many wrinkles. Just because it’s
wrinkled doesn’t mean it’s bad. Many people get old, get wrinkles. Doesn’t mean they’re
bad, just old, same thing goes with the passion fruit. The old ones could still also be quite
good and delicious. Now while we’re talking about varieties, while these varieties are
good, giving that nice tart flavor that we’re used to, even better than this standard kind
of passion fruit, I think the orange kind passion fruit, also known as the Jamaican
passion fruit. That is significantly sweeter than this standard kind and that’s the kind
I would grow, hands down, over the more common passion fruits.
I guess, because I’ve collected a lot of these passion fruits now, I’m gonna go ahead
and go inside and show you guys now how this farm uses these to turn their passion fruits
into cash at the local farmer’s market. So now I’m gonna show you guys how this
farm uses its lilikoi to make a value added product. So no matter whether you have a farm
for commercial purposes and you’re trying to make some money to live off of or whether
you’re just a home gardener and you have a lot of extra cropage of fruits and vegetables
that you’re producing that you can’t use, we’re gonna show you two important ways
that you can be able to preserve them to turn that into extra food for you, your family,
and your friends or into extra cash at places like farmer’s markets and other outlets.
That’s really important to me, as someone who grows my own food, I’d rather eat out
of my yard than something else, but the problem is once you get ripe fruit here…the problem
is this stuff is perishable. Passion fruits may last a couple good weeks off the vine
fresh, but after that time, they’re gonna go sour, go bad, and then they’re only gonna
feed your soil, if you’re composting them back again—which is a good use and I would
recommend that before throwing them out. That being said, the best use for fruits and vegetables
that you’ve been growing is to get them inside of you. After all, that’s why I grow
my food. I don’t grow my food for farm or for profit or anything, I grow it for me,
and I want to eat the highest quality of food and my two hands grow the best quality food
I’ve ever tasted in my opinion. So let’s get in to the two ways.
The first way that they like to use here is the juicer. And actually, one of the ways
they found out about me and my work was they were looking at “How can we use our passion
fruits?” and they saw a video in a foreign country where they’re actually juicing passion
fruits and they looked up videos on juicing passion fruits and guess what? I have a video
juicing passion fruits! I’ve juiced so many different kinds of passion fruits and vegetables,
it’s silly! Because if I have a lot of a certain fruit, I’ll juice it, because it
reduces the amount that I have to drink to get the nutrition in me. Plus, the juicer
removes the fiber, so that whatever you’re juicing—especially in the vegetables—makes
in more assimilable to that our bodies can extract the nutrients and get the nutrients
out of it. In general with fruits, I don’t like to juice fruits too much because we can
digest fruits fairly well. Technically we’d be considered fruitivores and we’d be eating
lots of fruits naturally because we don’t need any tools to eat many of the fruits out
there. But on the vegetables with their hard fiberous cellular matter, the juicer really
breaks open those cell walls and extracts the liquid gold by separating out the fiber
from the juice. And it’s the juice of the fiber that really feeds you is what Jay Kordich,
formerly known as the Juice Man, taught me. Now I need to give you guys a disclaimer,
I do sell juicers, and if you guys want to help support me and the work I do, including

for a juicer, blender, or food dehydrator, which I’ll be talking about in a little
bit. So basically what they do is they take their
passion fruits, they take a knife and they cut them open. So I’m gonna go ahead and
cut one open, show you guys what we got on the inside. On the inside you’re gonna see
you got a lot of pith, and I’m sure the pith is edible. And you have a little bit
of fruit. They take an ice cream scoop and basically scoop that out into the juicer.
Now the thing with inside the passion fruit, you’re gonna notice that there’s a lot
of fruit pulp that you can eat, but also a lot of seeds. Now, you can chew them up and
swallow them, or chew them up and eat them, it’s not a problem, because there is a lot
of valuable nutrients in the seeds, but I like to remove the seeds in them, and the
juicer’s an easy way to do just that. Another fruit I love to juice in my juicers is the
cactus fruit. The seeds on that fruit can also be eaten, but unlike the seeds in the
passion fruits, the cactus seeds you can’t chew up. They’re very hard and that’s
why I like to use the juicer to get rid of the seeds on the cactus fruits.
Wow, man! These smell so floral and fragrant. I’m sure this juice is gonna be quite delicious.
So I’m gonna go ahead and cut a whole bunch more of these passion fruits up, and then
we’re gonna go ahead and make a nice juice for you guys when I got this all ready to
go. So here’s my tenth passion fruit going right
in to the juicer. Now we’ve been basically filling the juicer with it off to save electricity.
I’ve filled up this whole chute in here with the passion fruit and now it’s just
full of the seeds and the pulp. As you guys can see, we’re already get some juice to
drip out of there. But now we’re gonna turn this on and you’re gonna hear the juice
come on, grind up all the seeds, and separate it from the fruit pulp. Wow look at that!
You can see all the seeds come out on this side and all the delicious juice come out
over on this side. Alright so that looked like it worked fairly
well, and if you are gonna juice fruits such as the passion fruits, I do recommend a vertical
style juicer. This is the Omega VRT330. Another one that would probably do a little better
on the passion fruits specifically is the all new Omega VSJ. I found it grinds up things
a little bit better than the original VRT series does.
We’re gonna go ahead and tip this juicer up, get ever last bit of juice out of there
and do a little quicko-changeo, and here’s my passion fruit juice, a hundred percent
fresh. No this is not orange juice. But hey, orange juice, passion fruit juice might make
a really good mixture actually. Check it out! One little glass of passion fruit juice made
with fresh picked passion fruits from the farm here. Mm, wow! Tangy, yet sweet. Kinda
reminds me of those sour pixie sticks and some orange juice. It’s quite good, I like
it, although many people may find this maybe a little bit too strong. At the farmer’s
market, they’ll actually sweeten this with some agave and sell it. But for the hardcore
people like me, you’re gonna want to get this stuff straight up. One of the things
I really like to do with this stuff is mix it with some sugar cane juice and it’s one
of the best drinks on the entire planet. So once you juice the passion fruits, get
all the seeds out, you will need to use this fairly quickly or, once again, it will expire.
Luckily it has a fairly high content of Vitamin C which allows it to say fresh for probably
up to three, four days in the fridge, but once you get it to this form, you’ve concentrated
the nutrients without the seeds there and you can actually just freeze this passion
fruit juice and it’ll stay preserved in the freezer. I always encourage you guys to
use your fruits and your fruit juices as quick as possible, but I would much rather drink
frozen, defrosted passion fruit juice than some kind of canned or bottled juice out of
the store any single day of the week. Now the other thing they do that’s really
cool is what they do, they take the pulp here that they get out the first time, and then
they re-juice it. So let me go ahead and show you guys how that works really quickly here.
Because this will allow them to make another product and allow them to get even more juice
out of their fruits. I mean it’s all about yield and getting the most out of the foods
you grew and one way of doing that is taking all this pulp, once again right down into
the chute of the Omega VRT juicer. Turn this machine on—listen very carefully. The juicer
is grinding up all those seeds down and down further and getting more liquid goodness out
of it and, as you guys can see, it’s coming out. Now, the second pressing is actually
with the seeds and it’s grinding up the seeds and now the pulp is fairly dry so many
single, older style juicers such as this one you can put the pulp back through to get a
further extraction. Now this definitely works better with things that have nice hard seeds
that could get crunched up because the juicer needs some hard fiberous material to work
and doesn’t tend to work well on mushy apples where there’s not a whole lot of seed matter
to help push that through. But if we look closely at the differences between these two
juices, and we didn’t make a whole lot that second time through, but we got a nice light
looking orange juice color and then a more darker, thicker passion fruit juice over on
this side that has some of the seed residue. I’ve tasted both of these before and definitely
the first pressing by far tastes better, but the second pressing has the added benefit
of the nutrition out of the seeds, a small percentage, into the juice. And this is how
they use the second pressing to do the next thing that I’m gonna show you guys.
So next what they do with this next mixture is they make this next special treat right
here, natural fruit roll-ups. Now you may have had these as a kid, it seems like fruit
roll-ups are hard to buy these days, but this is a hundred percent fruit in these fruit
roll-ups. They simply mix the second pressing passion fruit juice with some other tropical
fruits to make some delicious fruit roll ups. And I’m gonna go ahead and show you guys
what this stuff looks like here and this is the value of having a food dehydrator. Now
if you are using a food dehydrator—because if you preserve it into this state, it lasts
significantly longer. And this would make a great treat for trips.
This stuff actually can be shipped back to the mainland, but fresh fruit can’t be shipped
but once it’s processed, whether it’s into a jam or jelly or, better yet, a fruit
roll-up such as this, it can definitely be shipped back. Oh and check that out, man.
Passion fruit fruit roll-up. Delicious goodness. Hey, I haven’t had a fruit roll-up actually
since I was a kid. Look at that! Peels right off. Oh man! This is uber delicious! Hey…if
it’s Halloween, it can second as a mask for Halloween. “Stick ‘em up! Give me
all your money!” This stuff is insane! I think if I had a passion fruit orchard, I’d
be making this stuff all day long. So yeah, you can dehydrate the passion fruit, and you
can dehydrate it with the seeds, but the problem is the seeds will get all hard, crunchy, and
gritty, and nobody wants a fruit roll-up with passion fruit seeds in it. And that’s why
they simply use a juicer to extract out the passion fruit flavor, deliciousness, and dehydrate
it without the seeds mixed in with another in-season tropical fruit here.
Now the next way I want to show you guys to use your passion fruits is another appliance
they happen to have in the kitchen. So I’m gonna go ahead and clean this set-up up, and
share that with you guys next. So now we’re gonna share another way you
can use your passion fruit, or virtually any other fruit and vegetable that you grow in
your garden that your have excess of or just another was to use it in general. So as we
went over earlier, I really like the juicing because it concentrates the nutrients, takes
out the fiber, and what we have next here in the blender that actually just blends up
everything. The liquids and the fiber. Now, Vitamix will want you to believe this is a
total juice, but to be a juice is something with the fiber removed. It gets digested significantly
faster than something blended would. In addition, the juicer is absorbed and digested quicker
than the blended smoothies or the blended items would be. Another thing that’s not
often talked about is the juicer, it’s very quiet. It runs at a low and slow 80RPMs for
that Omega VRT350. And this Vitamix has two-plus horsepower, runs at over two hundred and forty
miles an hour, over 25,000RPMs or revolutions per minute. So 80RPMs verse, you know two
hundred and forty miles an hour. That’s a lot of speed, so with the higher speed it
does more oxidation so it damages the nutrients in the produce, so I only recommend, if you’re
gonna blend, blend only as long as you need to to get the desired consistency.
And the other thing is that once you blend things up, it tends to oxidize significantly
faster because you’re basically injecting with air. It’s like if you have a car, you
get a scratch on your car, you live next to the ocean, it rusts really fast. Whereas a
scratch on your car in Las Vegas, unless it rains, it’ll barely even rust. And so that’s
what kinda happening to the fruit or vegetable that you’re blending. So if you do make
blended things, you wanna use them immediately. So what I’m gonna do next is share with
you guys how we simply take, once again, our passion fruits, and we’re just gonna go
ahead and scoop them out into the blender and this time I got about five passion fruits.
I juiced about ten. Because when you juice things, it actually reduces the volume and
when you blend things, it actually makes more volume! You’re thinking “Wait a second,
John. How can blending make more volume? If you start out with a hundred percent, how
can you end up with a hundred and ten percent?” Alright, well you geniuses out there have
already figured that one out, right? Because this isn’t a trick question. It’s like
Click and Clack the Tappet brothers, right. They have their puzzler series, I like that
show when I’m driving in my car on the weekends and I hear them on my way to the farmer’s
market. But yeah, this is not really a trick question. What happens is when you put everything
in the blender, and you turn the blender on at high speed like we’ll do in a minute,
you’re not actually making new matter or new material, but what you are doing it aerating
the food that you have in there because, once again, the blender’s spinning really fast.
And if you said more aeration and you’re gonna have more air bubbles, pat yourself
on the back! So yeah, so we’ve emptied out five passion
fruits in there and simply what we’re gonna do is turn this guy on. And that thing is
running super fast, super loud, and simply what we’ve done now is blended up five passion
fruits and we had this much volume and now there’s just a little bit more volume because
it’s totally full of air and if you open this up and look closely, you can see the
air bubbles, and sometimes you can see the air bubbles coming out. So we’re gonna go
ahead and finish off the rest of my juice here… Mm, I’ll remember how that tastes.
And now we’ve got our five passion fruits blended… Look at that consistency. Wow.
And we just got about as much as a glass as we had when we juiced it, but we only used
half the ingredients. So if I’m running low on vegetables and I don’t have a lot
of vegetables or fruit, then I’ll tend to blend them because it goes farther. It’ll
fill me up quicker. But in my opinion there’s also less nutrients contained within this
because it is oxidized. If I have a lot of abundance, then I tend to juice more, like
I have so many kale, collard, and leafy green leaves in my garden, I could just juice it
all day long and not worry about it. Now the thing with this is, yes, it is filled
with air and it’s also gonna taste different because we did not remove the seeds. And it’s
a really gritty texture. It’s alright, but I think I prefer the smooth juice much better.
Now I always want to give you guys options on how to use some of the produce you grow
whether you have your own passion fruit farm or other kind of fruit farm or just growing
fruits and vegetables at home. Blending is an excellent way to incorporate them into
your diet. Now one of the things I want to guys to do is stop buy things at the grocery
store and start using the produce you’re growing instead.
So what the passion fruit juice would do is it would make an excellent fresh substitute
for vinegar. So simply, you could just take this fresh passion fruit juice, it has a nice
tangy flavor, plus when you blend up the seeds it releases those nice fatty acids or the
oils into there—so it’s kind of a richer texture—you could pour this on a salad dressing.
This would make an amazing salad dressing alone by itself. You could use this in the
place of vinegar in different recipes. For me personally, my salad dressing would be
blended passion fruits with just a handful of macadamia nuts and that would give me a
little bit of a fatty flavor and I’m sure that salad dressing would be quite delicious.
Now to use your vegetables in the blender, because vegetables don’t tend to blend too
well, what I would recommend is making what’s called a green smoothie. You fill it about
this much with some purified water, and then you take you leafy greens, put it in your
blender. Not so many, maybe two to three leafy greens to start at first, and maybe three
or four bananas. Blend that up. This’ll allow you to get more leafy greens in you.
This is very important, especially if you’re not used to eating the dark leafy greens such
as the kale, the collard greens, the broccoli greens, the cauliflower greens. That can be
very strong tasting. But I want you guys to know that things you grow in your garden is
a lot less strong tasting than things you buy in the store that’s been shipped from
California especially this time of year, that’s been on a truck for a week and degrading and
loosing nutrition all during the whole process. Plus using the rock dust. Everything is just
gonna taste better with rock dust, in my personal opinion. But yeah, that simply makes a green
smoothie so that you can get some of those greens, get some of the foods that you’re
growing. So that’s why I really like some of the appliances. They allow you to include
more of the stuff that you’re growing in your garden.
So the last tip that I wanna share with you guys today on preserving your harvest is freeze
drying. Freeze drying is popular with the preppers and survivalists. You guys will buy
freeze dried ice cream and that’s what the astronauts took I guess on some NASA mission
one day. But they have all kinds of freeze dried foods, but they are now starting to
get available home freeze dry machines and they cost about twenty times than what a standard
dehydrator does at this point. But hopefully soon the price will be coming down and freeze
drying is the best way to preserve the food in my opinion because it’s done at a low
temperature, preserves the most nutrition, and literally just takes out the water. So
hopefully one of these days I’ll have an episode on freeze drying your own food as
