located in Elburg, the Netherlands Fruit trees The starting of a new tree.. ..cutting the scion and rootstock.. ..applying the right sized scion to the rootstock.. ..bind it thight and carefully together.. ..the tops (scion) are waxed for protection against infection and dehydration.. ..the benchgrafts are bundled together and stored in cool storage till planting.. ..the benchgrafts are planted out on the fields with a 4-row deep planter.. ..the tractor is driving autonomous by GPS with a maximum deviation of 2 cm.. ..the plants are put inside the ‘wheels’ on the marked dots, to ensure the distance between the plants.. ..after a while we take of the competing shoots from scion and rootstock.. ..we are looking for one good shoot outside the scion to form the tree.. .. in the second year, we cut the new growing leafs in the top half through.. ..with this treatment we change the hormone balance in the tree.. ..now the tree is stimulated to branching sideways, and not growing upwards only.. ..have a close look: not the full top is cutted away, half the top leafs only.. ..the trees have grown and branched well.. ..digging out the two year old apple trees.. ..the trees are transported to the hall.. ..after receival of the trees, we start grading the trees.. ..binding the trees in bunches and make them on pallets.. Rootstocks .. a new field of mother rootstocks are planted in spring. Now, autumn, we lay them down on the field.. ..the layers now forming the new stooldbed or motherbed.. ..a mix of sawdust and peat is driven by the plants on the stoolbed.. ..this will stimulate the growth of roots.. ..pushing the soil and sawdust smoothly together.. ..the rootstocks are cutted off from the stoolbed.. ..the stoolbed can last for more than 25 years.. ..grading the rootstocks on quality of roots and straightness.. ..grading the rootstocks on size (thickness in mm).. ..the camera in the green box is checking all rootstocks one by one.. ..checking the rootstocks manually before bundling.. ..the plants we grow are certified by authorities.. ..trees and rootstocks stored in cool storage with high humidity.. ..finally, the trees will find their way to the fruitgrowers..
