Ask a Dietitian: Advice for the Holiday Season


[music] So the holidays can be a time of excitement and possibly anxiety, of high emotions and a lot of outlay of emotional and physical energy, and for those individuals that are struggling with an eating disorder, This can be a really, really challenging time. Some of the things that I thik can be really helpful, at the holiday time, would be to really emphasize your own self-care. Recognize that your limits could be tested by additional requests to go to this party, or get together with these folks. And, I would really encourage you to set your own boundaries. You don’t have to say yes to everything. And to recognize that — keeping yourself well-grounded, well rested, stay on a regular schedule as much as it’s possible, to help keep your own regulation will be really helpful in these times. So, to balance the opportunties to engage with people with the need to also rest, relax, restore so that you keep a sense fo capacity around that. It’s when we run-down that things can get to feel much more difficult. So, try and keep that balance in place, and try to stay on as much of a regular schedule as possible, and that can include: eating at regular times, getting regular rest, trying to not stay up extra late, or get up late, later in the morning. — And watch for times where you know that might be especially susceptible for you.
